Summer Internship at HERE Technologies

In June 2021, I got the opportunity to do an internship at Here Technologies to enhance the quality of their digital maps by adding location points.

Here Technologies is a location intelligence platform with its headquarters in the Netherlands. When it comes to the field of digital mapping, Here Technologies is one of the leading companies. With more than 8000 employees working across 56 countries Here continues to provide its users better services to make their commute easier. It provides both web and mobile solutions which makes it more accessible to the consumers. Just like Here Maps, more such companies are working in the same field of location intelligence. Companies like Google Map, Apple Map, Carto, Mapbox, Esri ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online. Despite so many competitors Here has proven to be one of the top companies in this field.

Today, various companies, both national and international, are incorporating the Here Maps application in their solutions. It covers the maps of over 200 different countries, a feature of navigation guided through audio, real-time traffic-related data, building/house numbers, etc.

Introduction and Problem Statement :

I was one of the students from Bennett University who got selected for this internship. We worked towards the enhancement of the quality of their digital map product, known as Here Maps. With these Maps, Here Technologies provide their users with user-friendly digital maps which helps the user in many ways like route optimization, location data, and correlated services.

For the enhancement of maps, we used their Map Creator tool which was very handy.

All of the selected students were divided into different teams of 6–10 members and had to achieve the weekly targets which were assigned to us.

For enhancing the quality of their digital maps we were required to add more Points of Interest and Point Addresses that were not already marked. After validation, the users would be able to use these location details for various purposes.

Approach :

As a team, we divided the set target within ourselves and made sure everyone reached their goal. We tried not to interfere in each other’s work and also assigned different cities to different team members to avoid any confusion. Once every week or two we arranged a meeting to discuss our individual progress and our progress as a team. Since the internship was remote, we had to coordinate online.

Further, we first marked the locations which are more essential than others like hospitals, schools, pharmacies, etc. In addition to the name of the place we also added the phone numbers and related information so that it becomes more accessible to the users. We also had to make sure that the locations which we were adding were highly accurate because even a single miscalculation from our side can cause the user to go to an unwanted location.

Experience :

In total, I marked 2248 new places which included restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, gyms, cafes, etc. I was able to meet my weekly targets on time and hence, I was successful in completing the internship. During the internship, I hardly faced any challenges both individually and as a team. Overall the experience was pretty smooth. I learned about various things about digital mapping, GPS (Global Positioning System), etc. Along with that I also learned the significance of consistency and following deadlines.
